Texas Tech Red Raiders Prepare to Sue Teams Over Scheduling Boycott

Texas Tech Red Raiders are ready to sue teams that won't play them in 2026 due to the Brendan Sorsby eligibility saga.

What happened?

The Red Raiders representatives have told Big 12 officials the university is “100%” prepared to litigate if the league disciplines the program.

Texas Tech will face Abilene Christian Wildcats on September 5, 2026.

Why it matters for Texas Tech Red Raiders

The firestorm began when a Lubbock County district judge granted Sorsby a temporary injunction overturning the NCAA’s permanent eligibility ban.

Sorsby had admitted to placing thousands of wagers over four years, including bets on his own Indiana team while redshirting there.

What comes next?

Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark told athletic directors the league is reviewing legal options, including championship game ineligibility and postseason bans.

The NCAA is expected to appeal the ruling next week, with renowned antitrust attorney Jeffrey Kessler leading Sorsby’s case.

And the Red Raiders may sue individual schools for “colluding” to freeze out Texas Tech, according to Board of Regents chair Cody Campbell.

But AD Kirby Hocutt issued a statement stressing the university neither filed nor funded Sorsby’s lawsuit.

So the standoff between the Red Raiders and the rest of college athletics may only be beginning.

The reaction from other teams was swift, with Kansas State AD Gene Taylor labeling the ruling “fing bulls” and acknowledging Big 12 administrators had discussed boycotting Texas Tech.

Utah’s Mark Harlan said he was “disheartened” by the decision, while UCF’s Terry Mohajir said he would never play an athlete who bet on games.

Texas Tech’s Joey McGuire has pumped the brakes on Week 3 Brendan Sorsby return, citing the ongoing saga.
